A Guide to Online Counseling

During the pandemic there was no available psychotherapy near me. All the psychotherapists I talk with said they must see clients face-to-face. I had to do something to get help so I tried online counselling, and you know? It was easier less expensive and more effective.

With online counselling we sit in front of a computer, and the counsellor looks at us, sees our face, talks to us and explains things in a way that we understand.

Online counselling is ideal for people who cannot go to a face-to-face counsellor because they may be afraid of what they will say to the counsellor and what they may tell the counsellor themselves.

Online counselling allows you to have maximum privacy and maximum confidentiality and it does not need a large office. It only needs a computer, Internet connection and a secure hard disk. As always, all the confidentiality is provided by the secure server, not by you as the client.

Online counselling is for all people who feel intimidated by people, who feel shy, and for those who are not good with others.

The online experience is perfect for people who want to speed up the process of recovery. They can easily write their thoughts and feel confident that they will not be misquoted and interpreted. The main advantage of online counselling is that it minimizes the anxiety of not knowing if the session will be kept confidential and actually being able to look back on their own sessions if they wish. As the Internet enables the counseling to be available from any location even from their own homes.

The main disadvantage of online counselling is that it is difficult to speed up the healing process. Even if you want to speed up the process of recovery, you may be at a disadvantage if you are not very tech savvy.

If you have ever felt afraid of what you will write in your messages, worried that they will be misquoted and misinterpreted, then this is definitely the method for you.

If you feel that you are intimidated by people, if you feel that you do not have the best conversations with other people and if you feel that you are shy then this may be the best solution for you. You get to speed up your process of recovery from your own pace and in your own comfort.

As therapy is not performed in front of a mirror, you get to be yourself without having to worry about others perceptions of you. You do not have to worry about your words being misquoted if you write silently.

The online experience is not as secure as the offline experience and you have to take the security precautions like making sure your computer is secure and using a private domain.

The online experience of counseling may be the most secure way of counseling you find. However, you have to make sure that the people you have in your online sessions are trustworthy and can be trusted with your most inner thoughts.

There are lots of online counselors which you can choose from like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN, AOL, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Live, Google, AIM, MSN Messenger and so on. You can choose the most trusted among them based on your convenience and budget.

You have to make sure that you go for an experienced online counselor, someone who has experience with your type of problem and he/she has enough education and training. The experience of the online counselor is the most important factor in the decision making process. The online counselor must be able to listen well and understand your problem well. This is the best way of counseling for you and you do not have to worry about other people’s views and opinions. As an online counselor, you have total control and you can do what you want to do and at your place of choice.

Make sure that you choose an experienced counselor and do not choose one who is new and has not have experienced yet. New counselors may cause problems which are unpredictable.
